Energy Saving Opportunities through Glazing and Shading Alternatives

Windows are the weakest elements due to their high heat transfer coefficient and responsible for 60% energy heat/gain loss. Healthcare buildings one of biggest consumers continuous occupation hours medical requirements, providing comfortable conditions people in need care staff; yet recently less attention was given healthcare unique operational requirements advanced equipment. Thus, main purpose this study evaluate saving potentials windows through glazing shading alternatives over a case study. Within study, single patient room Izmir Turkey has been chosen as simulated sixteen scenarios generated by using four different systems. Each design scenario DALEC lighting, heating, cooling, total consumption. Results showed that lighting consumption constitutes highest demand (up 52%) transmitting usage can reduce loads. Finally, up 16.3%, is possible only changing types.
